Why learn New York Salsa?

Got two left feet? Perfect, that's exactly who this course is for. Salsa is one of the best ways to warm up your week, meet new people in Brisbane and finally have somewhere that isn't a screen to spend a weeknight.

New York style (sometimes called Salsa On2) is the smooth, musical version of salsa you'll hear at every club, wedding and social around the world. Learn the basics here and you can dance anywhere.

Why LocoMojo

  • Built for complete beginners. Most students walk in with zero experience. We start from the basics and build up week by week.
  • No partner required. We rotate partners throughout class so everyone dances with everyone. Singles and couples both welcome.
  • Small, friendly classes. Big enough to feel like a community, small enough that we know your name by week two.
  • NY style, taught properly. The most popular salsa style worldwide. Same musical timing you'll hear at any social, anywhere.

Before you book

Do I need dance experience?
No! Our introduction course is designed for complete beginners. We start from the very basics and build up gradually over the 5 weeks.
Do I need to bring a dance partner?
No partner needed. We rotate partners throughout class so everyone gets to dance with different people and learn both perspectives.
What is meant by leader and follower?
In partnered Latin dance, the leader initiates movements and guides the follower through the dance. The follower responds to the lead and adds their own styling. Both roles are equally important and challenging in their own way.
What is New York Salsa?
New York Salsa (also called Salsa On2 or Mambo) is a smooth, elegant style of salsa that originated in New York City. It's danced "on 2" meaning the break step happens on beat 2, giving it a more musical, sophisticated feel compared to other salsa styles.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in. Avoid restrictive jeans or short skirts. For shoes, wear smooth-soled shoes and avoid rubber soles or anything with grip like joggers or running shoes. No open-toed shoes for safety.
How long is each class?
Each class is 45 minutes. The course runs for 5 consecutive weeks on the same day each week. There's also 15 minutes of social dance time between classes.
